Synopsis: Mai Taniyama is an ordinary high school girl who likes to tell ghost stories with her friends.  She meets a mysterious young man who turns out to have been hired to investigate a supposed haunting in an abandoned school building.   Then Mai accidentally breaks one of his video cameras and even gets his assistant injured.  Feeling guilty she ends up taking the assistant's place during the investigation and witnesses some unexplained phenomena.  The young man is Kazuya Shibuya who runs Shibuya Paranormal Research (SPR), but Mai decides to call him 'Naru' because of his lofty, narcissistic attitude.
From left: Masako, Ayako, Yasuhara, Naru (Kazuya), Hosho, Mai, and John
The apparent haunting gets more severe and more investigators are called in.  They include:
  • Hosho Takigawa is a former Buddhist monk who is adept at exorcising spirits (using Buddhist mantras) and is very brave.  He appears to be very laid back and even wears stylish clothes.  Mai is put off by his appearance at first, but soon discovers he is a capable expert and very brave.
  • Ayako Matsuzaki is a Shinto shrine maiden who is brash and outspoken.  She doesn't look or act the part of a holy maiden by any means.  She also has the ability to release spirits (using Shinto kuji like the 'nine cuts') although her reputation is not very good.  Mai surmises that she talks a good game, but doesn't have the spiritual power to back it up.
  • John Brown is a Catholic priest hailing from Australia.  He is very soft spoken and kind.  When performing an exorcism he uses holy water and reads passages from the Holy Bible.
  • Masako Hara is a famous television star who has the ability to sense and even channel spirits (a medium).  She apparently has a crush on Naru, but its unknown whether he returns her feelings.  Mai is instantly jealous of her.
  • Lin Koujo is Naru's assistant and keeps to himself.  He is highly capable and even has some spiritual abilities.  Mai is convinced he hates her.
I really hope, for Mai's sake, that's just a dream
Naru ends up hiring Mai to work with SPR to pay off the rest of the camera she busted.  The group investigates a wide variety of 'hauntings' with varying degrees of authenticity and danger.  Each member contributes in some unique and valuable way.  Mai feels a bit out of place among these seasoned hunters, especially Naru and Lin who are both very forthright in their dealings with others.  Over the course of the investigations Mai becomes a believer and she even begins to show some skill at solving cases.  When the group find a real haunting or possession is when the true danger begins.
The team have fun investigating a possible haunting in the park
Subsequent cases SPR takes on include:
  • They visit a home where it's believed a poltergeist is at work.  The family includes a young girl who has a creepy doll.  Can the group uncover the tragic history of the house and the mystery of the doll before another accident happens?
  • The team is then called in to a school where many strange accidents have been happening to students.  It appears a desk is cursed, but also other places in the school.  A girl who exhibits psychokinetic abilities (spoon bending) has been blamed, but Mai is convinced she's innocent.  Is the girl lashing out at her enemies after they publicly ridiculed her?
  • Something is purposefully interuppting young lovers at a local park.  Whenever someone tries to kiss they get splashed with cold water.  Is it the work of a jilted spirit?
  • John brings the team to the aid of a local parrish where possessions have been happening more frequently.  A boy disappeared many years ago and it appears his spirit is becoming agitated.  Can the SPR team solve the mystery before another child goes missing?
  • The team is called to another haunted high school where the principal and headmaster are both gruff unbelievers.  They meet a helpful young man named Osamu Yasuhara who explains the curses started happening after a first-year student named Sakauchi took his own life.  Add the fact the entire student body has been playing a strange game similar to a Ouija board and the school has become a hotbed of spiritual activity.  Mai has a horrible dream which spells disaster for the group.  Can Naru solve the case before anyone else gets hurt?
  • Several groups of paranormal researchers are called in to solve the disappearance of a pair of young men in an old mansion owned by the former prime minister.  Not all of the investigators are what they appear to be and not all of them make it out alive.  The house has a macabre history and Mai seems particularly sensitive.  When a seance is held all hell breaks loose!  Can the group escape the horror hidden beneath the house?
  • A family hires SPR to help them avert a curse which happens any time the head of the family changes.  The team faces their toughest challenge yet as they encounter possessions, malevolent spirits, and even Naru is caught unawares.  The death toll rises and Mai's dreams become increasingly dire as time runs out.  During the last change a team of ghost hunters were lost and SPR could suffer the same fate!
Keep your eyes on this creepy doll...or else!
Pros: Good cast of characters (with actual character development), nice blend of creepy horror sprinkled with a little lighthearted comedy, opening/ending sequences/music were decent and reminded me of those late night psychic/spiritual infomercials, I liked the multiple episode story arc format which allowed suspense to build up until the last episode of each case, a few genuinely scary moments, not many horror anime out there that do a good job
The SPR crew encounter this dangerous hell hound!
Cons: Some of the solutions to the cases can be far-fetched (like the first case, the one with the boy who disappeared, and the last case), the ending of the final case was too convenient for all of the story buildup, some goofy moments, not all questions are answered
What has Mai gotten herself into?
Mike Tells It Straight: I almost quit this series after the first three episodes, but am very glad to have stuck with it to the end.  The story was originally a light novel series, then a manga, then adapted into this anime series, and currently an ongoing manga again.  There are not many decent horror anime out there and I can say Ghost Hunt is one of them.  One of the best aspects of the show are the interactions of the SPR characters.  Mai is the main protagonist/narrator and she gives a good perspective on the other characters.  The characters grow over the course of the series (especially Mai's latent psychic abilities).
Performing a seance in the bowels of a haunted mansion
The series is split into multi-episode story arcs which I found to be very appropriate.  Each case takes a few episodes to solve and it allows a nice buildup of suspense before the finales.  I liked the characters which definitely grew on me over the course of the series.  There's some nice character development.  Some of the later stories were particularly scary (the Bloodstained Labyrinth and the Cursed House) and I enjoyed watching the series alone at night!  It's few and far between to find decent horror anime and Ghost Hunt does a good job.
Mai comes face to face with an unspeakable horror - is it just a dream?
Some things which bothered me about the series were the convenient ending to the final story arc.  We get a great buildup to the final episode and then it just ended with a convenient reveal of some hidden power.  Not how I would have liked it to end.  Everything up to that point was pretty good, but the ending was a letdown.  A few of the situations in the series were kinda lame and very far-fetched (even for an anime).  Okay, so it's way harder and more uncommon to have ghosts/poltergeists show up than what happened in the series (I've watched a few episodes of Ghost Hunters on SyFy network).
Some spirits can actually do harm to the living
Despite its flaws I still enjoyed the series and would recommend it if you are looking for a creepy anime to watch alone at night.  It's a good combination of humor (Mai's pining for the stoic Naru and her rivalry with Masako) and suspense while the group is confronted with difficult psychic phenomena.  The character interactions make the series along with a few scary moments.  It can be a little slow-paced at times, but I was surprised at how much I actually liked the series.
The team visits Naru in the hospital after a particularly nasty case

Someday's Dreamers Anime Review

Someday's Dreamers
Mahotsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto trans. Things That Are Precious to a Mage
Sentai Filmworks

$29.98 (2003-2004) Vol. 1-3/ea.
$34.98 (2003) Vol. 1 w/Artbox
ISBN 814131019714
Japanese/English Audio - English Subtitles
Director - Masami Shimoda
Studio - J.C. Staff

Synopsis: Yume Kikuchi travels to Tokyo from her home in the countryside to be an apprentice mage.  She possesses "special power" which allows her to perform magical feats.  In order to regulate the use of "special power" the Bureau of Magic was set up by the government and using magic without a license bears a penalty.  She apprentices under Masami Oyamada, a well-known mage with a mysterious "special power".  Masami runs a salsa club and lives in the apartments above the club.  Yume stays at an available room during her studies.  She gets very embarrassed because Mr. Oyamada is a good-looking man.
Yume comes from the countryside to study in Tokyo
Yume's mother is a powerful mage and Yume possesses above average skills.  She has a lot of potential, but controlling her power and knowing how to use it are very difficult.  Mr. Oyamada is a patient teacher and Yume meets other mage trainees like Angela Brooks, a young mage from England.  Mages work hard to help people, but are limited by the strength and type of special power they possess.  Some mages are weak and wash out of the trainee program.
Yume's first meeting with Mr. Oyamada and Smiley is a bit awkward
since they're not wearing any shirts (it was a hot day)
Each mage's power is different and they select a symbolic avatar when manifesting their special power.  Yume chooses a dolphin and her teach Mr. Oyamada manifests snowflakes.  Yume meets the famous mage, Master Chief Ginpun who admires her mother.  He takes an interest in her as she progresses in her training.  Yume befriends a local girl named Runa who plays hooky at the salsa club because she is unhappy at home.
Yume is paired up with trainee Angela Brooks from England
Two other people work at the salsa club - Smiley is Mr. Oyamada's friend and Melinda is his unofficial girlfriend (and a salsa DJ).  Yume is afraid she won't make it as a mage trainee and must find confidence in herself.  She gets to know Mr. Oyamada and all of the people around the club.  She uses her special power, but doesn't really understand it.  Can Yume succeed when she has so much self doubt and unanswered questions?  Will the shy country girl make it in the big bustling city?
The mysterious and wise Master Chief Ginpun (he's blind too)
Pros: Animation is solid with good character designs, opening theme song grows on you (nice and jazzy), story uses different accents for characters - like Yume hides a country accent which comes out when she gets nervous or talking to her family (this makes the original Japanese voice acting particularly good), nice ending
Yume watches as Angela summons her "special power" with
her tell-tale dog avatar
Cons: Yume has three hairs sticking up at the top of her head (called ahoge and defining her as a moe character), dub accents are pretty lame, they call using magic 'special power' which sounds dorky - "You're much better at using special power than me.", they say "special power" over and over again (and over and over...), simplistic and silly at times, very slow-paced and mellow
Yume befriends a young man who lost part of his leg and used to play soccer
Mike Tells It Straight: Someday's Dreamers is based on a manga by Norie Yamada and Kumichi Yoshizuki.  It occurs in a world where magic is called "special power" and accepted into the modern world through bureaucratic regulation.  Mages are gifted people, but not all are created equally and some have only a hint of power.  Our protagonist is a classic moe character (big eyes, hair strands coming off her head) who is shy and awkward in the big city.
Smiley, little Runa, and Melinda from the salsa club Pachanga
The story is about personal growth and emotional interaction with others.  Not a bad theme, but a bit simple and unrealistic at certain points.  It's a slice of life show after all and the pace is pretty slow.  I liked the music and the animation was good, but I got bored with the characters and story.  I recommend watching it in original Japanese with subtitles to see if you can discern the different dialects.  The dub attempted to mirror this change in accents, but I didn't really like the dub actors' performances as much.
Mr. Oyamada and Yume have breakfast together
It seems like this anime is the first in a franchise.  A follow up series with a different cast of characters was released domestically in 2012 called Someday's Dreamers II Sora.  The original creators Yamada and Yoshizuki continue to collaborate on stories in this universe they have created.  The first series is perfect if you're looking for something mellow and slightly interesting, but it was a bit bland for my taste.  I give it a fair recommendation, but with no imperative to track down a copy and watch it.
Yume uses her "special power"

Ellcia Anime Review

Ellcia
ADV Films
Complete Collection - 1 disc
100 mins. - 4 episodes
$29.98 (2006)
ISBN 702727156526
Japanese/English/Spanish Audio
English Subtitles
Director - Noriyasu Kogawa
Studio - J.C. Staff

Synopsis: King Nabosu of Megaronia discovered an ancient technology from a long-dead civilization and used it to conquer the continent of Hulk.  In a time of swords and sorcery he annihilated all opposition with guns and battleships.

Not content to rule just Hulk, the king subjugated the four island nations to the south including Eija.  He killed the king and queen, but took their son, Elluri, as a hostage.  The sacred book of Eija prophesies the downfall of the King by a ship of god which was used to rule Hulk a millennia ago.
The book of Eija begins bleeding as a precursor
to the prophecies fulfillment!
The King's daughter, Crystel, is obsessed with finding the ship of god called the Ellcia.  She journeys to Eija to find it.  A group of young pirates led by a girl named Eira is almost capsized by Crystel's fleet.  They follow her to the island and witness a massacre of Selties (native elf-like creatures).
Eira the jailbait pirate - worst hairdo ever!
The Selties help find the Chosen One who can captain the Ellcia against Megaronia.  It won't be an easy fight as the powerful soldier Phelkis has built an incredibly destructive ship and begins hunting the Ellcia.  Can the Ellcia prevail, will Elluri be freed from captivity to wreak revenge, and what link does Eira have with Eijia?
"If you don't give me the legendary ship of god I will
shoot you right in the face!" - Crystel
Pros: Couple plot twists (nothing too shocking), Ellcia's and Phelkis' ship designs were pretty interesting
"If you don't give me the legendary ship of god I will
cut your face off!" - Phelkis
Cons: Dated animation, horrendous character designs, weak plot - kinda generic by today's standards, Ellcia gets blasted on for most of the show, lame music
The Ellcia gets shot up by Phelkis and his Megaronian buddies
Mike Tells It Straight: Based on the cover image I thought Ellcia was a girl with punk rock hair who kicked butt with a sword and was kinda sad.  Little did I know Ellcia was actually a mystical ship the girl would pilot as the Chosen One.  The story was straightforward without too many surprises, decent animation for an older show, and I dug the look of the Ellcia.

All sorts of badness is happening to Elluri while
Eira watches helplessly
Absolutely hated the character designs and dub.  The misfit pirates were terrible and Eira's hair worst of all.  The Ellcia spent a lot of time getting hammered on by Phelkis and those poor Selties kept getting gunned down.  Ending was pretty good as far as a suspenseful conclusion.  Overall a very low recommendation - perfect dollar bin fodder.  Reminded me of Record of Lodoss War, but without any of the good bits.

Rune Soldier Anime Review

$39.98 (2005)
$39.98 (2008)
ISBN 702727127922
Japanese/English Audio - English Subtitles
Director - Yoshitaka Koyama
Studio - J.C. Staff

Synopsis: In the land of Ohfun there exists a band of female adventurers: Melissa is a priestess of Mylee, the god of war, and awaits the time when her chosen hero will be revealed so she can devote her life to him; Genie is a former soldier and powerful warrior; Merrill is a thief, obsessed with money, and works twelve part-time jobs to make ends meet while not adventuring.
Genie, Melissa, and Merrill interview Ila (sitting) to be their fourth
member, but she's not interested
Due to a rise in the number of hostile magical creatures they encounter, the group searches for a magician to become their fourth member.  What better place to find a magician than Ohfun, the location of the Magician's Guild and training academy for all the magicians in the land?  Well, apparently not such a great place after all.  It appears all the magicians in Ohfun are academics and none want to risk their lives adventuring!
Instead they get this genius - Louie!
Only one student magician named Louie is interested.  He's loudmouthed, a brawler, and as far from a regular magician as you could possibly imagine.  Plus his magic stinks because he spends more time working out than studying.  His adopted father runs the Magician's Guild and he got a free pass to attend the academy.
Louie breaks his magical wand on their first adventure
by smashing it on a monster's face
With no other options the group tries him out and are sorely disappointed by his performance.  He rushes into every fight, can't cast a spell to save his life, and falls for every pretty girl he meets.  Ila is his friend, a decent magician, and tries to help them out, but she faints at the sight of danger!  It's a tough job for these adventurers and their incompetent magician.
Louie trains with Genie to sword fight
What's worse - Melissa receives a sign pointing to her valiant champion - Louie!?  Eventually Louie learns rudimentary magic which helps the group on their adventures, but he's still more likely to use his "Louie punch" on a magical creature than a cast a spell.  He slowly wins over the girls through his stubborn tenacity and unwavering loyalty, but will it be enough to save the kingdom from an onslaught of magical beasts?
Can Louie and the group save the kingdom from fiery destruction?
Pros: Some genuinely funny moments, decent animation/character designs, lighthearted and enjoyable, just a tiny bit of fan-service, ending theme song was great (not typical to anime)
Louie fantasizes about getting all the treasure and the
beautiful ladies as an adventurer
Cons: No bonus features, could have used some more fan-service, episodic, no real plot, silly, lukewarm ending
Louie gets on Merrill's bad side
Mike Tells It Straight: I was pleasantly surprised with Rune Soldier - it was lighthearted and dumb, but somehow very charming.  Each character was endearing and their personalities were perfect - the tough warrior-woman, conniving thief with a heart of gold, straight-laced priestess, hot nerd classmate, and then there's Louie - completely clueless and well-meaning.
Louie creates a malfunctioning golem to help Merrill
This show doesn't take itself too seriously and dishes out consistent, mindless comedy.  The plot is mostly nonexistent and only hints at a greater underlying mystery (like who is Louie's real father?).  Set in the same universe as Record of Lodoss War (shares the same writer), but nothing like it.  Writer Ryo Mizuno must have wanted a lighter story after the serious plots in Lodoss War.
Merrill gets her wish - bathing in sparkling gold coins
Almost suitable for the kids, but has some very mild fan-service gags (Melissa loses a swimsuit top while Louie is fishing, Merrill loses her clothes while suffering the worst unlucky streak of her life).  No major nudity or jiggly breasts (which could have kicked this show up to the 'naughty fun' category) and the jokes are not too vulgar (although Louie does ruin a magical potion by peeing in it).
Another typical adventure with Louie
If you're looking for something fun and simple with decent animation and good characters - then check this out.  It's a solid show and doesn't make the mistake of getting serious at the end (like E's Otherwise).  Just good consistent comedy.

Puni Puni Poemy Anime Review

English/Japanese Audio - English Subtitles
Director - Shinichi Watanabe
Studio - J.C. Staff

Synopsis: Poemi Watanabe is a hyperactive 10-year-old with dreams to become a voice actress and a crush on the most popular boy in her grade.  Pretty normal, right?  You are @#$%-ing wrong!  She is thrust into a massive alien plot when her parents are killed by Alien #1, an extraterrestrial assassin.
Poemi is just your average and rambunctious 10-year-old
Moving in with her best friend, Futaba Aasu, and her six sisters, Poemi discovers they are secretly a squad of magical superheroes with inane powers.  Can Peomi manage to become a magical girl to stop the alien invasion and avenge her parents!?
The Aasu sister (from left) - Shii, Itsue, Nanase (top), Hitomi (bottom),
Mitsuki, Mutsumi, and Futaba
Pros: Wacky comedy, lots of fan-service - especially Shii, shounen-ai (look it up)
The sisters are captured by the same alien (with the freaky gonad) who
killed Poemy's parents!
Cons: The main characters are too young for fan-service (Poemi and Futaba), plot is too weird, some questionably poor taste at times, hard to follow
The sisters aren't doing too well against the aliens
Mike Tells It Straight: This is a magical girl show on crack!  It's got some mature themes - best friend Futaba is a hardcore 10-year-old lesbian trying to put the moves on Poemi and the alien assassin doesn't wear pants to cover his giant, hanging gonad.  WTF to the Nth degree and banned in New Zealand.  Spawned from Excel Saga (maybe even an unofficial sequel) with the exact same director, but far too manic for my taste.  Only watch it if you really need to go there and can handle the trip.
Poemi must become this kick-ass magical girl to save the sisters and
stop the alien invasion.  Oh yeah, revenge too!

Meanwhile Chris still exists in our world and the two halves of his soul communicate through a necklace they both wear.  When Byston Well Chris gets cut fighting soldiers then real-world Chris also is cut.  Can Chris save Byston Well and his real-world self?

Pros: The main character steps up to the challenge of risking his life to save people

Cons: Story is obfuscating, dub is lame, no biomecha like in Aura Battler Dunbine, soundtrack is weak

Mike Tells It Straight: Yoshiyuki Tomino is a legendary writer/director and the original creator of Mobile Suit Gundam and Aura Battler Dunbine (the original Byston Well show from the 80s).  This show is his worst ever.  Seriously, I checked and really don't recommend it.

ISBN 631595062373
English/Japanese Audio - English Subtitles
Director - Katsushi Sakurabi
Studio - J.C. Staff

Synopsis: In 1945 an alien race appeared on Earth abruptly ending the Second World War.  The aliens are known as the Genjyu ("phantom beasts") and have taken over half of the planet.  Massive 'brains' which hatch from eggs produce scores of 'drones', exude a poisonous gas, and kill anything showing emotions.

54 years later it's the year 1999 and humanity has developed Humanoid Walking Tanks (HWTs) to battle the invaders.  Pilots are scarce and the Japanese government was forced to begin drafting students into the conflict.  We follow the lives of the 5121st Platoon consisting mainly of drafted high school students in their struggle to lead semi-normal lives while defending Japan against the aliens.

Pros: Characters eventually grow on you, Hayami reciting a fairy tale and emptying his mind to survive a Genjyu infestation was really cool, extras include an awesome hard rock/metal theme song

Cons: Aliens get killed and disintegrate into nothing, character designs were bland, opening/ending themes are boring

Mike Tells It Straight: Portraying the trials of growing up amid the hardships of war Gunparade March is a somber yet silly show.  The grim reality of these kids fighting a war for human survival really hits home as deadly situations are faced and characters die.  GPM is not just a mecha show and contains equal parts slice-of-life topics, but it's a tough balance between war and the silliness of teenage dilemmas.  I can't say GPM is tremendously memorable, but it did spawn a full-length sequel Gunparade Orchestra (24 episodes + OVA).

$19.95 (2004)

Studio - J.C. Staff, GENCO

Synopsis: Densuke Mifune manages to be accepted at the exclusive Zashono Academy where he is forced to join the Eiken Club after a chance encounter on his first day.  The all-girl club is populated by many enormous-breasted girls. He immediately falls in love with Chiharu Shinonome (she has an ever-increasing bust size), but must overcome many obstacles to prove he's not just another pervert.

Densuke accidentally bumps into Chiharu on the first day of class
Each year the school clubs all compete against each other in some zany games to determine a champion.  Densuke must compete against Shima Kurosawa, last year's winner and the guy trying to steal away Chiharu. First he has to get past Chiharu's lustful sister Yuriko who wants to claim him for her own.  What's a wimpy, nerd schoolboy to do?
Members of the Eiken Club
Pros: Fan-service - pure and simple, comedy
Kirika Misono, head of the Eiken Club, is
never seen without something in her mouth
Cons: Over-the-top, no real story to speak of, can be offensive to sensitive viewers
This is just wrong
Kirika gives Miharu a playful squeeze
Mike Tells It Straight: An obvious satire of the harem anime genre where a pathetic, nerdy boy is surrounded by unbelievably attractive girls. Eiken goes to the extreme by having the boy pushed around by the girls and forced to cross-dress, conversely all of the girls have huge breasts and are constantly showing their underwear.  Kirika is always shown sucking or eating a phallic food (bananas, hot dogs) and I swear the girls' breasts jiggle when they're standing still. The most controversial aspect of this show is the character of a sixth-grade girl (Komoe Harumachi) with giant breasts flopping around uncontrollably.  You will not find another show quite like Eiken.  It has the most sexual innuendo and offensive material to women of any anime I have ever seen (and that's saying a lot).
