Synopsis: From the depths of the ocean comes the disarmingly cute and rambunctious Squid Girl to conquer the surface world!  She is sick and tired of surface dwellers polluting the sea and will teach them all a lesson by subjugating the whole 1,000 of them!  Her first target is a beach restaurant called Lemon and all the humans congregating within!  Squid Girl does everything with an exclamation point!
Squid Girl vows to make the surface dwellers pay for polluting her ocean!
Little does she know how woefully unprepared for a surface invasion she really is.  She has no strategy planned and knows practically nothing about human culture.  She appears at the restaurant and makes a big scene yelling around, but the owners are not having any of it.  Eiko is the store manager of the family-run restaurant and calls Squid Girl out on her invasion plans.
Squid Girl appears at the Lemon restuarant and announces her
conquest of humanity!
Squid Girl is not so easily turned away and demonstrates her impressive squid tentacle powers (her hair is really tentacles).  Too bad she smashes a hole in the shop while trying to swat a fly!  Now Squid Girl is on the hook for repairing the damage, but she doesn't have any money!  She must work at Lemon as a waitress in order to repay her debt.  Her invasion plans put on hiatus until she repays the debt, Squid Girl slowly learns about humans and makes some friends.
Squid Girl accidentally puts a hole in one of the restaurant walls (Eiko
is standing menacingly behind her while she freaks out)
Her tentacles are a huge advantage as a waitress and she's an excellent worker if a bit clueless.  Eiko's sister, Chizaru, is Lemon's cook and she is delighted to have Squid Girl as an addition to the restaurant when it's discovered that she can spit up black squid ink for noodle dishes.  Customers love the squid ink pasta!  Eiko is completely grossed out as she watches people eat what Squid Girl hacked up a few moments ago.
Squid Girl gets put to work in the restaurant to pay back
the damages for the hole she made.  She's a great server!
Squid Girl meets all sorts of humans - Takeru is Eiko's and Chizaru's little brother and he loves hanging out with Squid Girl (he calls her Squid Girlie), Sanae is a local girl who develops an obsessively romantic crush on Squid Girl, Goro is a dumb jock lifeguard with a crush on Chizaru, and Nagisa the part-time waitress at Lemon is the only human who is genuinely scared of Squid Girl.
Squid Girl spews out some squid ink for the restaurant's new
specialty dish - squid ink pasta!
Then there's Cindy the extraterrestrial researcher from America and the three MIT graduates who work for her.  She's convinced Squid Girl is an alien and wants to capture her for study.  Squid Girl becomes a popular attraction at the beach and a rival restaurant owner creates his own knockoff version!  Join the fun as Squid Girl's bungled attempt at taking over the human world actually gets her accepted into it.
From left to right: Eiko, Nagisa (the only one who is actually scared
Squid Girl will invade the surface world), and Chizaru (Eiko's cute older
sister who is actually really scary)
Pros: Lots of comedy and some genuinely funny moments, Squid Girl is a likable protagonist if a bit clueless, good animation, Squid Girl's tentacles are cool, a few great chapters with ghosts and creepy dolls, includes OVA episodes
Orcas are a squid's natural enemy and Squid Girl is deathly afraid
of them (and can't tell the difference from a floaty)!
Cons: Squid Girl's speech is laden with ocean-themed puns (are you squidding me!?) which can get a little old, some of the characters are one-trick ponies and get boring, not much background is offered on Squid Girl's origin which was a disappointment, opening them song is manic, non-ending
An unscrupulous owner of a rival beach restaurant creates a knock-off
Squid Girl, but it's really scary.  Run kids!
Mike Tells It Straight: Squid Girl is a simple show with a simple premise - a girl with blue tentacles on her head comes out of the ocean to subjugate humanity, but doesn't have a clue about human culture.  Hilarity ensues and the plot goes absolutely nowhere.  The show is basically a comedy with lots of slapstick, misunderstandings, and ocean-themed puns (she's come to ink-vade!).  I still have no idea why I liked it so much...
Eiko dreams she has a tiny pet Squid Girl
Each episode is cut into three parts which are usually unrelated and feature a different situation Squid Girl gets herself into - getting caught doorbell ditching, the three MIT underlings trying some new invention, or focusing on a supporting character's feelings.  The story doesn't have a plot progression, but events keep happening in a linear format and will sometimes reference past events.  No real ending to speak of and Squid Girl's outfit is totally ridiculous (why would a squid wear a dress?).
Cindy the alien researcher imagines Squid Girl's invasion of Earth!
It's not all bad and the positives seem to outweigh the negatives.  Squid Girl is very endearing and cute (I blame the tentacles).  There are some genuinely funny moments and my favorites were the creepy stories about ghosts/possessed dolls.  They just came out of nowhere and made me laugh out loud.  Squid Girl is a great straight man (er, squid) for all of the other characters to play off.  The animation is solid (Blu-Ray release helps).  The sub and dub script writers did a great job with the squid and ocean puns in Squid Girl's speech.
Sanae makes Squid Girl pose for cosplay pictures
I found the show to be entertaining and a nice bit of comedy fluff.  No cumbersome story to bother my tired brain cells at the end of the day - just fun and goofiness every time.  It's a cute show, not quite suitable for younger viewers (due to the scary ghost and creepy doll episodes, plus a small bit of fan-service), and great for those starting out with anime.  It's a typical comedy anime, but somehow...better.  If you hate this genre of anime then you'll probably not want to watch Squid Girl, but it's great if you want a short, funny series without a ton of over-the-top fan-service.  A second season was released in Japan, but apparently will not see a US release by Media Blasters anytime soon.  Too bad!  It's available on crunchyroll and I'll be checking it out soon.
This image pretty much sums up the show

Synopsis: 11 years ago a great catastrophe befell mankind as the Shadow Angels awakened from their 12,000-year slumber.  Before their sleep they ruled the planet from the city of Atlandia (the basis of the mythical lost city of Atlantis) and harvested humans for their life force, or prana.  Humans, called 'the wingless ones' by the Shadow Angels, were merely a source of sustenance and treated as livestock.  One of the Shadow Angels, called Apollonius, fell in love with a human woman, the warrior Celiane, and turned on his kind to free the humans from their oppressors.
Apollonius (red hair) falls in love with the human Celiane
The angel Toma loved Apollonius and was deeply betrayed by his rebellion.  He vows revenge and leads the Shadow Angels in a final harvest of humankind.  They attack cities using a harmonic song to entrance humans and collect them in massive harvest beasts to be deposited in the Shadow Angels' Tree of Life.  Their ultimate goal is to restart their species by feeding enough prana to the Tree.  Any resistance is crushed by cherubim soldiers, giant mecha with powerful weapons and abilities.
The angel Toma vows revenge for being rejected by Apollonius
Conventional weapons are meaningless against the Shadow Angels and their incredible tools.  Only the Division of Earth Vitalization Advancement (DEAVA) has any success putting up a fight.  Their commander, Gen Fudou, discovered an ancient technology created by Apollonius and Celiane which allows humans to pilot three incredible flying machines, called Vectors.  The machines combine to form the giant fighting robot Aquarion which amplifies the souls of it's pilots.
Reika pilots Vector Luna and coordinates with Sirius and Glen
Each of the Vectors are distinct and form a different version of Aquarion when a different one is at the head:
  1. Vector Luna forms Aquarion Luna - green, quick and agile, forms bow and arrow for long-range attacks, favorite Vector of Silvia de Alisia
  2. Vector Mars forms Aquarion Mars - blue, very fast, forms a sword, has long legs to perform kicks, favorite Vector of Sirius de Alisia and Pierre Vieira
  3. Vector Sol forms Solar Aquarion - red, the true form of Aquarion, a perfect balance of the three Vectors, can manifest "Solar Wings" on its back, mostly used for fighting attacks,
Solar Aquarion battles a cherubim soldier
Only special individuals called Elements are able to pilot the Vectors.  The pilots' souls make up the final component to form Aquarion and the three must be in harmonic unison for a successful "merge".  The merge infuses the Elements and Vectors with immense power to fuel Aquarion.  Each Element feels the power boost as a euphoric (almost orgasmic) release.
The base for Aquarion complete with ancient ruins and a barrier field
The Elements are all teenagers from around the world who are trained to become pilots in the secret DEAVA base:
  • Apollo is a street urchin discovered by DEAVA Elements Silvia and Pierre during a harvest by the Shadow Angels.  Apollo lived with a ragtag bunch of orphans who acted like a family before being entranced and abducted by a harvest beast.  He vows revenge and exhibits uncanny piloting abilities without any training to pilot Vector Sol.  He can even trigger the merge to Solar Aquarion.  It's thought Apollo is the reincarnated Apollonius.  His sense of smell is heightened and he seems almost feral at times.
  • Silvia de Alisia is the capricious daughter of a noble family and looks up to her brother Sirius.  She has the power of psychokinesis and is a skilled Vector pilot.  It's thought she is the reincarnation of Celiane and therefore will be in love with the reincarnation of Apollonius, but despises Apollo's low upbringing and crude manners.
  • Sirius de Alisia is the elder brother of Silvia and last heir of the noble Alisia family.  He is the epitome of refinement and culture.  An expert swordsman and the most skilled Vector pilot, Sirius appreciates elegance and immensely dislikes Apollo's constant sniffing.  Sirius is thought to be the reincarnation of Apollonius until Apollo shows up.  Sirius remains detached from the other Elements and eats all of his meals alone.
  • Pierre Vieira is a young soccer player from San Jose, Chile.  His entire soccer team was harvested and he hates the Shadow Angels.  He's one of the top Vector pilots, an insatiable ladies' man, and specializes in powerful kick attacks.  Despite being hot-blooded he displays surprising maturity when giving his friends advice.
  • Reika Ko has incredibly bad luck and strong psychic abilities.  Despite her penchant for misfortune she is a top Vector pilot and one of the few people Sirius considers a friend.
  • Glen Anderson is friends with both Reika and Sirius.  He's a top Vector pilot as well, but suffers a grave injury during the mission when Apollo is discovered.
  • Jun Lee is a science nerd and otaku.  He is an unparalleled inventor and has the ability to sense how things work around him.  Although not very skilled at physical combat maneuvers he has a strong will and never gives up.  He is one of the rookie Elements new to the DEAVA team
  • Tsugumi Rosenmeier is timid and another rookie Element along with Jun.  She loves old mechanics and Jun instantly finds an interest in her.  She passionately idolizes Reika and has a secret power which haunts her.  She is short with a surprisingly large and well-hidden bust.
  • Kurt and Chloe Klick are fraternal twins with a telepathic link.  They are ideal background support members, but also good Vector pilots.  Chloe is a target for Pierre's advances (she's a girl and breathing after all)
  • Rena Rune is a mysterious, wheelchair-bound, and blind girl who apparently can read the auras of people.  She exhibits strange powers and a proclivity for drinking blood.  Combined with her pale complexion it is hinted she may be vampiric in nature.
The different forms and components of Aquarion - from top left and
clockwise Aquarion Mars, Solar Aquarion, Aquarion Luna, Vector
Luna, Vector Sol, and Vector Mars
DEAVA and the Elements are challenged by the angel Toma with each successive battle posing a newly designed threat.  Commander Fudou acts as sage and mentor to the team giving them special training lessons to prepare for each new test.  Events are building to a crescendo which will determine the fate of the entire human race.  Can the stubborn Elements unify and energize Aquarion to save the day?
Apollo is thought to be the reincarnated Apollonius
Pros: Yoko Kanno does the soundtrack (Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop), some good theme songs (particularly 2nd opening theme "Go Tight" and ending theme "Omna Magni"), Shoji Kawamori directs (Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross, Macross Plus), great visuals - mecha designs for the combining elements of Aquarion, character designs, backgrounds, Apollo reminded me of a young Wolverine from the X-Men (especially the constant sniffing), couple good plot twists at the end, doesn't take itself too seriously
Silvia experiences a particularly good 'merge'
Cons: Shadow Angels are bland villains, Cherubim Soldier mecha designs are boring, too many training episodes, story drags on for 3/4 of the series until the final few episodes, felt like a mash-up of a bunch of different shows (Evangelion, Rahxephon, Getter Robo), a lot of goofy episodes
Silvia, Apollo, and Sirius get fired up fighting the Shadow Angels
Mike Tells It Straight: Aquarion felt like a mash-up compilation of many different mecha shows.  It contains every stereotypical character and plot element of the giant robot genre.  Giant mecha piloted by angsty, young adults must save the human race from an evil alien force.  The rascally underdog hero Apollo, ice princess Silvia who is too good for everyone, pompous noble Sirius, and cryptic sage Fudou were all pretty standard.
Toma plots another attack with fellow angel Otoha
The combiner robot aspect with the Vectors creating different Aquarions was pretty cool.  All of the computer graphic elements of the mecha battles were top notch.  Kawamori is a master of mecha (having been involved with both Macross Plus and Escaflowne) and the Aquarion robot is impressively complicated.
Solar Aquarion gets ready to throw down!
The visuals and music were great, but I felt like this show fell a bit flat.  The heroes and villains weren't really bad ass enough at any point.  It had too many goofy training episodes.  I think they were meant to help us get attached to the characters, but felt formulaic and monster-of-the-week.  The theological angle with the angels has been done before in both Evangelion and Rahxephon.  Aquarion didn't bring anything new here except maybe Kawamori's environmental comment at the end with the Tree of Life.
Silvia, Apollo, and Sirius merge
Speaking of the ending, it felt rushed and I didn't really mind seeing a few characters bite the dust.  Guess it was a bit of redemption for some.  I get it Kawamori, you're making a homage to all the great vintage combiner mecha shows of the past, but not taking it too seriously because they were all a bit ridiculous after all.  Nice touch with the orgasmic merging and gimmick moves.  I can give Aquarion a fair recommendation for being a slick-looking mecha show with nice music.
Solar Aquarion powers up
The story was kind of a let-down with delusions of grandeur and mediocre pacing.  I expected more from it and usually really enjoy this type of show (giant robots smashing things and all).  A quasi-sequel was released called Aquarion Evol which stars a whole new cast of characters and some reincarnated versions of old ones.  It focuses more on comedy and fan-service, but answers some questions left by the first series.
Solar Aquarion manifests 'Solar Wings'

Synopsis: Yurie Hitotsubashi was your average middle school student until one morning she woke up and realized she was a god.  It's a strange feeling and she confides in her best friend, Mitsue, about the change.  Mitsue is a good friend and takes her seriously.  They decide to test out Yurie's newfound powers to see what will happen.  On the roof of the school Yurie summons her will and exclaims "Kamichu!"
The girls of Kamichu! - Matsuri, Yurie, and Mitsue
A massive storm hits the town and it's not just a coincidence.  Yurie's power is real and she is the only one who can calm the raging winds!  It's a difficult adjustment for a shy middle school student to become a deity, but Yurie has some great friends to help her:

  • Mitsue - level-headed, wears glasses, Yurie's best friend
  • Matsuri - runs a shrine with her little sister after her father retired, always trying to get more visitors to the shrine, her zeal for Yurie's newfound godhood is borderline obsessive, a great friend
  • Miko - Matsuri's little sister, shy and very polite, has the ability to see spirits and deities, likes Yashima
  • Kenji - classmate of Yurie's, only member of the calligraphy club, he practices on the school's roof often with his paper floating away on the breeze, Yurie has a massive crush on him
  • Yashima - a minor deity who lives at Matsuri's shrine, he wants to be in a rock band and play guitar, often possesses Mitsue to perform on stage
  • Shoukichi - Yurie's little brother (one grade below), likes Miko
  • Tama - Yurie's cat, she has adventures
  • Ino, Shika, Chou - three small spirits who are sent by the God Association to help Yurie

Yurie meets all sorts of little deities and spirits around her town
Gods and spirits are very common and represent almost everything - telephones, bicycles, poverty, email, rivers, buildings, battle ships and vinyl records to name a few.  They have their own organization called the God Association and Yurie is now a member.  She visits a special land where the gods dwell and have meetings.  The experiences are all new and somewhat frightening for the timid Yurie.
Yurie feels very out of place in the world of gods
She is assigned three tiny helpers to help with her new duties as a god.  When she uses her power her hair instantly grows very long and she usually falls asleep from the strain.  Her life becomes very complicated as she gains notoriety including calls from the President, investigating a cat uprising, dealing with a visit from the poverty god to her town, and attending the annual God Convention.
Yurie is assigned these little guys to help with her god duties
All the while Yurie must deal with typical middle school problems like trying to confess her love to the boy she likes, dealing with rivals for his affections, feeling like her friends are ignoring her, and trying to find her lost cat.  It's not easy being a god!
Miko, Matsuri, Yurie, and Mitsue palling around
Pros: Cute and well-rounded characters, cool/creative designs for all the spirits/deities (especially the little ones who help Yurie), great ending theme song/credits, very solid animation and backgrounds are awesome, whimsical, received an Excellence Prize at the 2005 Japan Media Arts Festival
Yurie turns into a cat while trying to find Tama
Cons: Very slow-paced and mellow without much really happening, a few episodes were duds (boring), subject of multiple gods/deities may not be popular with some Christian viewers (the anti-Christmas episode won't help either)
Hanging out at Mitsuri's shrine after school
Mike Tells It Straight: Kamichu! is a sweet and slow-paced little show with lots of adorable characters.  Yurie is modest and bashful, definitely not a dynamic heroine or god-like personality.  Her story contrasts the regular every day life of a teenage girl with a spiritual world filled with benign entities.  Yurie's friends and adventures are all very charming.  All the various deities have fun and imaginative designs.
Matsuri looks worried after Yurie uses her power and falls asleep
The animation is surprisingly good and backgrounds really shine.  I liked the music and the ending theme song/credits were great.  I guess the only drawback is the show's slow pace.  It was so mellow I got a little bored halfway through and stopped watching for a few weeks.  I picked it up again and finished it.  I wasn't expecting the series to end the way it did, but it was really nice.
Yurie talks to Yashima about being a god
Everything about Kamichu! was really cute and adorable.  Nice change of pace from cliched action and fan-service shows.  It reminded me a little of Studio Ghibli works for the whimsical quality, but didn't have any real danger or intrigue (or excitement).  Overall a good recommendation for exactly what you get.

Cutest ending ever!

Synopsis: Watanuki is a regular high school student who happens to attract spirits against his will.  He considers this ability to be a horrible curse as creepy spirits constantly appear to him.  They are usually harmless, but some can be dangerous and most are very scary.  One day he ends up at a house after ducking some spirits and meets a strange, beautiful woman named Yuko.  She runs a wish-granting shop out of her home and offers to grant Watanuki's wish to be rid of his spirit-attraction power.  He accepts her offer, but the price is to work at his shop until she says his debt is paid.
Watanuki finds himself in Yuko's wish-granting shop
Now Watanuki cooks and cleans for Yuko at her shop every day.  His parents are no longer alive so he's used to taking care of himself.  He's actually a stellar, self-taught chef and makes amazingly complex dishes.  Yuko is a strange woman who acts immature, but is a powerful magician.  She is fond of drinking and lounging about the shop at all hours.  She has two young girls named Maru and Moro helping her.  They are very animated and run around repeating things people say.  They may not be human.
These two are Maru and Moro
Himawari is a girl in Watanuki's class and he has a massive crush on her.  She is his friend and a very nice person who is cheerfully oblivious to his true feelings.  A popular boy named Domeki becomes entwined in Watanuki's life because of his ability to repel spirits.  His family owns a shrine and he learned a great deal from his grandfather.  Yuko requests he helps Watanuki on supernatural errands because Domeki can defeat any spirits Watanuki attracts.  Despite this he considers Domeki to be his chief rival for Himawari's affection and dislikes him tremendously.
Himawari, Domeki, and Watanuki have lunch together - Watanuki is
spazzing out as usual
What are the secret wonders and dangers hidden in Yuko's shop?  Watanuki experiences many supernatural phenomena working for her (even though she is demanding and usually drunk).  He is constantly foiled by Domeki's presence around Himawari.  From pipe-foxes to spirit girls to hard-drinking Mokonas - it's never a dull moment and no  is too small to send Watanuki into a self-absorbed rant!
Yuko meets with a customer while Watanuki, Maru, and Moro eavesdrop
Pros: Great opening theme song (used throughout the entire series), cool ending theme songs and sequences (especially the one with Maru & Moro playing air guitar), excellent combination of humor and supernatural stories, characters play off of each other really well, Yuko is sexy
Watanuki befriends a pipe-fox from Yuko's shop.  It has magical powers
Cons: No definitive ending, characters have inconsistently long limbs and tiny heads throughout the series, Black Mokona is a little silly (and drinks too much!), Watanuki can be a bit over-the-top whiny and over-reacts to everything, those four dorky-looking little gnomes on flying surfboards who protect Zashiki-warashi
This is Mokona - hide your alcohol
Mike Tells It Straight: I was pleasantly surprised by xxxHolic (pronounced "holic") and found it to be an amusingly quirky show.  It's based on a manga (Japanese comic book) by a well-known, all-female artist group called CLAMP.  They've created quite a few manga series which have been adapted into anime over the years.  A few noteworthy titles are Chobits, X, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Cardcaptor Sakura.  The manga for xxxHolic and Tsubasa have some crossover characters - Yuko and each features a Mokona - Black Mokona in this show and White Mokona in Tsubasa.  I haven't read the manga or seen Tsubasa so I can't say I noticed anything in xxxHolic related to the other.
Yuko enjoys a cocktail at the beach
xxxHolic had great music and I really liked the opening theme song - 19sai (translated 19 years old) by Shikao Suga.  The ending theme songs and sequences were good too.  The series was episodic with each episode having another 'caper' for Watanuki and gang to 'solve'.  The story didn't really progress in any linear fashion, but it was more about the character relationships strengthening as they spent more time together.
Domeki and Watanuki get caught up in a spirit parade
Watanuki, the main character of the series, definitely gets a love/hate reaction.  He's whiny, selfish and has silly over-the-top reactions to every imagined slight.  I've heard some say he's exactly what makes them tired of anime - the extreme body contortions with wavy arms, gushing tears to portray sadness, and goofy slapstick.  My only response is "welcome to anime comedy, get used to it".  If you can stand Watanuki then you'll dig the series.  I'll admit it took a few episodes for me to warm up to Watanuki's personality.  After a few episodes he grew on me and I started to chuckle at his antics.
Yuko downs another sake!
Yuko was an immediate hit - she's beautiful and mysterious.  A strong female lead.  The character designs were kinda weird with long, gangly appendages and tiny little heads.  Over the course of the series the appendages seemed to get longer and heads tinier.  It added to the weird and supernatural aspect of the show, but may have been a tad overdone.
Zashiki-warashi is a wind-spirit who inadvertently causes trouble
for Domeki and Watanuki
It was all about character relationships.  Watanuki really hated Domeki for being a third wheel with Himawari.  He freaks out constantly when the poor guy shows up and is downright mean.  It was one of the best parts of the show as straight-man Domeki brushes aside another insult from drama-queen Watanuki.  The series felt very modern gothic with an offbeat sexual energy.  I tagged this ecchi/fan-service, but only because of the buxom Yuko and the beach episode.
Domeki is a skilled archer who can also dispel spirits with chi
Overall a fun, quirky series with episodic, supernatural adventures.  Never really frightening (except maybe the last episode - which was actually quite the perfect ending to the series when I think about it), but exciting and creepy.  Be warned - it has lots of over-the-top anime comedy.  It's the first CLAMP series I've watched and I liked it (this one stays in the collection).  Looking forward to checking out more by the group.
Poor Yuko has a hangover - she drank too much again last night!
